Sneak peek of our wedding images..

I have been bursting at the seams to do a HUGE post about our wedding, the honeymoon and all the details, but... it seems that we are going to have to wait a little longer to give a few magazines a look at the images before they hit the world wide web. Nonetheless, I promise they will come eventually in a blog post the size of Texas! I am in LOVE with the images and Jose, he did such an amazing job and cannot wait to share them all!
Until then head to
our page on facebook to check out a sneak peek, Enjoy!!

I'm Back!

It has been almost a month since we packed up and headed out West for our wedding. Since then we have gotten married- yay! Had an amazing honeymoon through Sonoma and Hawaii, traveled to Chicago for a gorgeous farm wedding and now made our way back to Florida. I have so many amazing details and images to share. For now, I am sifting through suitcases, boxes and a million photos. Thanks so much to all of my amazing clients for your patience during this last month. It has been amazing and I am refreshed, renewed and so eager for what's to come! 'Til then....

Officially T - One Month and Our Wedding Photographer is...

I have been so busy with weddings every weekend that I haven't had much to plan and blog about our own wedding. Today, May 11th, we are officially a month away! It is amazing how quickly 2 years (Yes, engaged for almost 2 years!) has flown by and all the things that I put off til 'later' are now upon us. While I am intentionally not blogging all the details just yet (have to keep some things a surprise) I do promise complete blog posts detail by detail after the wedding. I have already learned so much about planning and weddings and how it is all so much fun and all so hard! I think that planning a wedding is an ultimate self exploration and you learn so much about partner as well. While I still have yet to feel what it is like to experience the day I have taken over a year to plan, I have learned enough to know it will be over in the
blink of an eye!
That is why, for us, photography was absolutely number one (shocker!). Deciding on a photographer for our wedding was beyond challenging. Not only did we have many talented friends offer to help us capture our day, but there are so many talented photographers I admire and I am incredibly indecisive! We wanted our friends to be at the wedding as 'friends' and wanted a photographer whose style reflected the type of wedding we are choosing to have and how we want to remember it. After months of debate and soul searching we both excitedly agreed that we wanted none other than
Jose Villa to capture our day. He is one of the most talented photographers and artists in the business and his work is one of a kind. Jose's style embodies everything I was looking for... it is real, natural, breathtaking and romantic. He loves outdoor locations, details and one of a kind events- simply perfect! Here are a few of the many reasons we love Jose so much and can't wait to have him at our wedding

Need I say more? I love living behind the camera, and for maybe the first time ever can't wait to be in front of the lens!!! Check out Jose's blog for more gorgeous wedding inspiration.

Back from Nevada!

After attending WPPI (which was amazing and inspiring as always!) and after hitting Vegas with a couple of my bridesmaids (super fun & still haven't recovered!), I headed to Northern Nevada for a couple of days to do a little wedding planning. It was beautiful in Tahoe with snowcapped mountains and a glassy lake. While there I snapped this image from my ceremony site with my iphone (yes, the iphone).
Now three months away, I am getting down to the smaller details of the wedding and realizing how much there is still to do!

tahoe_bw_01

You would think that shooting wedding almost every weekend I might know a little about planning a wedding. While some things come easy, there are certainly a few things that seem to be a little tougher. Here are a couple tips I have to share after my last trip:

1. Definitely discuss your ceremony and reception timeline far in advance with your photographer, planner and other important people. I am wishing I could change my ceremony time but the invites are printed... shucks!
2. Definitely do a hair and make up trial. My first hair and make up lady and I did not speak the same language, I said red, she heard blue.. you get the picture.
3. Definitely talk to family and friends about helping you find props needed for the wedding. My cousin is bringing wine barrels and a possibly a chandelier for me to borrow that will save lots on rentals.
4. Definitely start working on the guest list far in advance. I had last minute additions, deletions and I'm pretty sure my invitation designer might kill me.
5. Think about where you will get ready. This is so important for the opening shots and details shots of your wedding. You want the space to flow with the feel of your wedding, not be cluttered and have lots of pretty light. Important for makeup and photos.
6. Do a cake tasting. While I don't really have a big sweet tooth and truly want a cake for the pretty pictures (shocker right?) I did do a cake tasting and was so glad we made time for it. We ended up with flavors I would have NEVER chosen from a piece of paper and think it will be a nice surprise for guests to eat something out of the ordinary.
7. Definitely visit your location at different times of the day to see the light. This is a little harder for me as it requires two plane flights, however as it gets closer I will have my mom out there scooping it out.
8. Don't sweat the small stuff.....I'm still working on this one. Happy

The Miami Half Marathon.. again!

It is that time of year again that once again I strapped on my running shoes and stood in the dark at 6:00 am with 18,000 other crazy people to run 13 miles through Miami Beach. This is the fourth year in a row that I have run the Miami Half Marathon and the third year that my mom has run it with me. Each year I am so inspired by the energy and all the types of people that run... young, old, big, small, disabled, you name it. Though my legs would like to say a few words of their own today, we had a blast! I didn't bet my time from last year, but I finished in 1 hour and 47 minutes (three minutes off my goal). Somehow after the pain of it all, the races are addicting and I'm already looking for the next one. I've gotta do something about those 3 minutes!

Chad and his dad came to watch us finish (thanks guys!!), I'm there in the purple...

Our enagement session and save the date

Over the summer I have been trying to get as much of my own wedding planned before wedding season kicks back in. My dear friend Georgia, who is a fashion photographer in New York City, graciously shot our engagement session for us. She did a beautiful job and helped me adjust to being on the other side of the lens (weird!). With the images I created a save the date that was sent out a few weeks ago. I packaged the folded card in glassine envelope with a wax stamp. They were truly simple and all about the images, of course!

Here are a few of our favorite images Georgia shot:

Back from the Keys

Last night we pulled back into Miami after spending the weekend in the Keys and riding Harleys down to Key West. We stopped in Islamorada (of course) and also at a few other resorts that we have weddings at this season. The riding was great, something that we had always wanted to do and I am happy to scratch it off the bucket list (that is still about 50 pages long!). We thought planning the trip for the middle of October would ensure a cool trip with clear skies. While we only got rained on once, it was welcomed as we had near record heat the entire weekend with a heat index of 106 degrees! Very hot atop a motorcycle in boots and jeans... despite the heat, we had a great trip. I absolutely love the keys and think that it is a great destination. I will never get tired of spending time and shooting weddings there. Since I had very limited space to pack (one saddle bag) I opted to take the weekend off from shooting. However, it never seems right to blog without some eye candy, so here is a few images from my keys weddings in the past... Happy Monday!

Fashion Color Palette...

I have been giving a lot of thought to colors and really trying to figure out what I want mine to be for my wedding before we get too far. I desperately need to decide on bridesmaid dress colors and have been struggling. From the beginning I really wanted to have all the bridesmaids in different dresses and even different colors that complimented one another. Something to keep the feel eclectic and unique. However, through a little research I have come to understand why most brides just choose one dress and one color, because it's soooo much easier! Finding dresses that compliment one another, the girls and the guys is tricky. It spite of the challenge I do still have my eye on different dresses, I just need to narrow down the colors. Maybe gray, or latte and blush, or even off white. Here are some inspiration images I have selected along the way that I love, let me know if you have any thoughts...

Catching up with summer...

As summer slips away I am trying to catch up with it. Even though it is still about 5 million degrees here I can’t help but notice today is the last day of August and before I know it the fall will be here. I have been trying to get those projects done, enjoy the long days, and gear up for the fall. In the meantime I have neglected my blog, so now I am getting up with that too....

Last night my friend Aria invited us to join them for a summer’s feast. The day before they had caught Florida lobster (yummmm!) and Aria (who is an amazing cook) is auditioning for a cooking show and needed to be filmed cooking them. Not only was the food AMAZING but we had a great company and really enjoyed watching Aria at her best. She definitely would be great on TV, so watch for her, hopefully she will be sharing her talents with everyone soon!

The Keys, Alison and Arthur

This weekend Chad and I headed down to Islamorada to one of our favorite spots, the Moorings. On Saturday I shot Dee and Abel’s intimate wedding at Pierre’s (coming soon!), and then we relaxed and spent some time with our friend and former bride Alison. Alison and Rick are expecting their first child in September and we took a little bit of time to capture Alison’s baby bump before heading back to Miami. Here is Alison and Arthur (the other love of her life)....

Vera Wang

I just received an email of a Q & A from Vera Wang. I thought it touched on something I think most brides go through so I thought I’d share:

Picture 18

Question:
I am recently engaged and although I am very excited about planning the wedding, I already feel overwhelmed. Everyone has an opinion. While I want everyone to feel included, I’m beginning to feel like it is not “my” wedding anymore…
Answer:
The emotions around a wedding can be complicated. Despite the happiness, some couples feel a loss of freedom and identity as they negotiate with their family and friends, and with each other. The challenge is to avoid a block in the lines of communication.
An engagement is a time when people learn new things about each other – patience is essential. Intimacy is also important. Commit to quiet moments that will allow you to retain your sense of autonomy and to reconnect with your partner on a very basic level.
For a bride, remember to focus on elements that are truly “yours” – the wedding dress being one. Your dress should be the ultimate statement of “you” on your wedding day.

Summer

Its hot and humid and weddings have slowed down with the heat of the summer. Though we are remodeling our condo (very crazy!) we have also found some time to enjoy some good ole summer fun. There’s nothing quite like BBQ’s, swimming pools, wet dogs, and the blue skies of summer. When life gets complicated, I think its a great time to get back to the basics. Get out and enjoy it!!

Just a dress

One of my favorite things when arriving to shoot a wedding is to see the bride’s dress. Dresses have become so unique, and so much more than just a dress. They are truly a reflection of the bride’s style and how she wants to be seen on her day. I love when brides step out of the box and get something very unique that really shows so much of their personality.
When I got engaged, I knew one of the most important things to me was the dress. I am not a dress up kind of girl, and while normally I am most comfortable in my jeans, tshirt and flip flops, I knew that I wanted to wear a gown on my wedding day. Like most girls I began scouring the web for images and inspiration and as soon as I started trying them on quickly found what I thought I wanted and what I liked on were two different things. There was the slinky greek goddess look, the traditional A line dress, the princess poof, the fashion forward and classics. There were so many ways to go and I have truly loved them all. While I went to quite a few stores
Priscilla of Boston, Chic Parisian and Ever After all in the Coral Gables area were my favorites. With so many gorgeous dresses and such wonderful women to help navigate you through the process, it was a joy. I found that I am not a very decisive buyer, I guess I never have been, often returning to a store several times before I make a big purchase. With the dress I was not different. I really struggled with making such a big decision. So many looks to choose from, the cost (ouch!), and picking the one. Yesterday after about 100 text messages, several phone photos, and calls I made my decision. While I don’t want to spill the beans on the details (Chad’s sake), I officially have a dress. I have to say it was harder and more fun than I imagined! Now I just can’t wait to wear it!

Vintage Plates

The theme for my wedding is ‘rustic elegance’ and from the start I was looking for personal touches throughout the wedding to give it that one of a kind feel. My mom came up with the brilliant idea to ask 10 women who are close family and friends to go out and collect vintage plates at their local antique store or along their travels. All the plates will be different and will be bought from all over the country. I loved the idea of getting the distant family and friends involved and think it will add a great feel to the tables.
While in Nevada we made invites. My dad came up with a poem for the message and we included a photo to express the look we are going for. Here they are......

Nevada and planning my wedding.. finally!!

After being engaged for almost a year Chad and I headed to Northern Nevada (where I am originally from) to plan our destination wedding. We arrived, and so did some of our family members that flew in to be apart of the adventure. Though we had nothing planned to date, we had been talking with wedding planner Tara Addeo, who was going to be guiding the planning extravaganza, thank goodness! For my brides who are on the fence about having a planner... all I can say is, get one!!!

After three days jam packed with appointments, I couldn’t believe how quickly things came together. On day 1 we settled on the hotel we wanted the guests to stay at. Day 2, we meet with the florist, caterer, and found a ceremony location. The ceremony location was a complete stroke of luck, and I was jumping for joy when we discovered it... I had been dreaming of grass, overlooking the lake and it had seemed impossible (unless you spent a small fortune to rent a private home), until we found it, and it was in the budget!

weddingtrip_5

Day 3, we meet with another caterer and florist as well as tackled the reception location. We planned to have a lakeside ceremony on Tahoe, then load the guests in coach buses and head down the grade (from lake tahoe to the valley below), for a reception in the valley. While we found two great options, but we all fell head over heels with my longtime friend Ashlee’s century old ranch. It was exactly what I was hoping for and it couldn’t be anymore unique or charming. With some lights, flowers, and great details I think it will be stunning...

weddingtrip_12weddingtrip_13weddingtrip_15

I am so happy about both locations, that when we found the Tahoe Queen for our welcome party it seemed things couldn’t get better. We plan to have all the guests for a welcome cruise the night before our wedding as they will be coming in from all over the country. The Tahoe Queen has been renovated and is the most unique cruise boat I have ever seen. They serve a full dinner, have a jamming band, and cruise to emerald bay, the jewel of tahoe. Love it!

weddingtrip_8weddingtrip_7

We had also decided that the day after the wedding we would invite our guests to ‘Hike of their Hangover’ on the Tahoe Rim Trail. We’ll see how many of them are up for a hike the day after, but I know it’s worth the hike when you see the views!

Dog Days of Summer

Over Memorial Day we escaped the busy streets of Miami and headed south to my favorite hideaway in the keys, Islamorada. As it was a bit of a last minute trip we were very lucky to find somewhere to stay during the holiday and incredibly lucky that our friend Alison (one of my former brides) offered to take Axl in for a doggy vacation. We had a great weekend and I had a great time celebrating my birthday on Sunday at one of my favorite restaurants, Morada Bay of the Moorings.
We were lucky enough to spend some time on the beach with Axl and his friends Molly and Arthur. Nothing quite like the dog days of summer!

Home Again...

This afternoon, regrettably, I landed back in Miami after hoping the 4 hour flight from Vegas. Granted, I am SO happy to get home to my handsome fiance and see my favorite furball, Axl, but I didn't want to leave WPPI yet!! This was my very first year at WPPI, and I am completely blown away. I could not have prepared myself for the amount of people, amazing classes, the shear number of vendors, or the incredible energy and buzz that surrounded it. I am exhausted, seeing that I walked about 10 miles a day (seriously, I think about 10), and there were so many classes that I wanted to go to that I just went to as many as possible. Yesterday I started a class at 8 am and finished the last one at 10:45 pm, agghh!! But I am so completely in love with the experience, and am already thinking about how I will plan for next year. I met so many amazing people, connected with old friends and made new ones.
I am so thankful to be doing something that I am so passionate about, and that I simply cannot get enough of. I am also so excited to be in such an amazing industry with so many talented and kind people.
Before I started shooting weddings I worked in the fashion photography business for almost 6 years. It is the base for my experience and knowledge, and I must thank the photographers that I assisted who taught me so much and truly made my style what it is. With that said, the fashion industry is in stark contrast to that of weddings. While assistants and digital techs would recommend one another, most of the industry (especially the photographers) kept to themselves and were rather secretive about techniques and styles amongst each other. It was a very competitive industry that can be difficult to navigate and work in. For the last three years I have been exposed to the support, openness, and amazing compassion that the wedding photography industry offers. It is so refreshing to me to see the top professionals in the business open up about everything from business practices to the most unique technique. Every professional is there to help each other and build relationships with the people that might be considered their competition. I can't say enough about these people and how they have inspired me.
Now home, and back to my usual desk and computer, I can only reflect on what I have learned. I am inspired, energized, and so excited to get back to work! Thanks so much to everyone that has offered so much of themselves, have I mentioned that I love what I do!!

The Miami Marathon, wooohooo!!!

After getting done with Gabby and Enrique's wedding, I hurried home to catch 4 hours of shut eye before I woke up at 4:30 in the morning to run the Miami Half Marathon. It was my third time running the race, and this year there were more people than ever.. a whopping 30,000!!! With 30,000 people all gathered in downtown Miami at 6 am, the energy is amazing, and the lack of sleep was far behind me. The race took us over the Macarthur causeway, through South Beach and back into downtown and the weather couldn't have been better. This year I ran my best time yet, 1:48, and had a blast! Can't wait to do it next year, and I already signed up! My friend Jon from Jon Scott photography happened to be there shooting the race and here is an image he captured of us heading into South Beach, thanks Jon!

Things That Inspire

For me, the holidays have always brought feelings of reflection and nostalgia. They remind us to slow down, take a look around, and take it in. To appreciate those people we love, and to embrace what we have, rather than what we want. This year more than ever, people are looking at their lives, their stuff, and making changes. Realizing that maybe happiness cannot be measured in the inches of your flat screen, but rather the pitch of you laughter or the company gathered around a holiday meal.
Photographs have forever been a way to look back at how far we have come, where we started, and to relive the joys of another time. I (obviously) have a huge passion for images and what you can learn about someone in a single frame. One of my goals for 2009 is to share what inspires me on the pages of this blog, and maybe in the process, inspire you along the way. This month in Martha Stewart Weddings, one of my favorites, the back page titled 'a look back' had this image, with the following text. It is such a joyful image that truly captures their day and I loved what they had to say about it.

'This joyful wedding photo of Mariano, Margaret, and their youngest guest (the son of one of their friends) was featured in our 1995 inaugural issue. The baby "was like our little mascot that day, a symbol of things to come," says Margaret.'

marthastewart

"Margaret and I met in 1991, at a dinner party at an Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village. IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT, or as we Italians say, 'Colpo di fulmine.' What I loved most about her was her eyes, and that true to this day. They're beautiful. But so much has changed since we first met. For one thing, our relationship has strengthened enormously, and having four children together has brought an incredible amount of joy to our lives. It used to be that my idea of perfection was cycling home in the dark, with fireflies lighting the way. Now, my perfect day is waking up in the mountains during ski season, hitting the slopes with my family and doing something we all love together. That, to me, is exhilarating." -Mariano, Martha Stewart Weddings

Holiday Cards!?!

Today I thought, like I do every year at this time, ' I should really start my Christmas card so I'm not scrambling last minute'. And like every year, I continue on with whatever I was doing before and don't think too much more about it until December 1st, then December 15th, then the Post Office announcing the Holiday Postal Deadline. Procrastinate? Never!

So while I am going to attempt to get a jump start this year, (and stick to it), I thought I would remind all my clients as well, not to procrastinate! I know this year people are on a budget more than ever, and I think it is a great year to think about postcards (a low cost option), and using an image from your engagement session, your wedding, or your portrait session that we have already shot. Here are some ideas...

Axl and Georgia's Day

This past weekend my dear friend Georgia from New York came for a visit. She is a very talented fashion photographer that I am sure will one day be gracing the pages of top publications and ads. Aside from her photographic talents, she is also blessed with more energy than any person I know. I would consider myself pretty high energy, when I'm with Georgia, my opinion sways. She spent the day with my dog, Axl, and in the same day the hit the dog park, the dog water park, and the dog beach. Wow! Axl slept for about two days after.... Georgia shoot these images with her iPhone and I was so proud to see Axl's leap into the water (we've been working on that!), and here he is at the end of the day on the beach. My Wedding Update

After going back and forth, and trying to decide WHERE to have our wedding.. we have also had to figure out the WHEN. We haven't been in a big hurry to set a date, or plan much of anything for that matter, but it had been our plan to tie the knot sometime in 2009. However, after finding the the right venue has proved very challenging, and it seems that it is simply bad timing for most of the important people in our lives, and bad financial times for almost everyone, we have decided to wait until 2010. We are still planning on Lake Tahoe, which to not do a winter wedding leaves you with about 3 months during the summer when you won't really have a chance of a freak snowstorm. So as of now we are thinking of June 2010. It sounds so far away, but if things keep up the way they do I am sure it will be here before we know it. This will give us the time to do it right, save money, and hopefully give our guests enough time to get prepared as well.

I definitely feel less stressed out with this decision and can focus on the projects at hand for KT Merry Photography. I have not made any vendor/venue decisions yet for the wedding, and think I will slowly start to now. Does anyone know of a great property in Lake Tahoe that would rent it out for my wedding?? Any other ideas? We're only going to do it once, better do it right!!

Craziness and Puerto Rico!!

Well, the last week has been a little crazy busy, and I have been a bad, bad blogger. However, I will make it up!! I am so happy that season is back and the weather is finally getting cooler! I am busy with new and past brides and getting ready for the Wedding Salon Event at the Biltmore, November 10th. Which is invitation only, but if you'd like to go be sure to email me and I'll get you on the list so you can come see us!

This last weekend I was in Puerto Rico for Veronica and Jeremy's wedding. It was beautiful, and reminded me how much I love destination weddings! I will post more tomorrow but here is some eye candy for now!

My latest Wedding Inspiration Board

Though I haven't had much time to work on planning my wedding, I have still been collecting ideas, images, and inspiration. We are gearing more towards a wedding in Lake Tahoe (the area I'm from), and haven't set a date, but looking at late this summer (if a miracle happens) or early summer 2010. Its been incredibly hard to find a outdoor venue on the lake. I have been looking at private homes mostly and many have restrictions (curfews, yuck!), or are just way too expensive. We are set on having everything mostly outdoors, and would love to either have the lake or a ranch type setting.
If you are a bride, I have found it very helpful to put together inspiration boards to show the feel, and mood that you would like on your day. It can give you a focus and direction. Here is my latest:

Bunny?

Today I was on my way home with my dog, Axl in tow, when I decided to stop into a local dog park to let him run around. On my way in I saw a little black bunny hop into the woods. I know there are no wild bunnies in South Florida, but I didn't see where he went in the dark woods. So we headed into the dog park, Axl ran around like a maniac, and after getting throughly covered in mud, we were on our way back out. I decided to keep my eyes peeled in case I saw the dark little bunny again, and sure enough I did. He was sitting in the woods, just barely off the road, clearly out of place, and not quite sure what to do. Someone must have dumped him. When I walked up to him, he hoped right up to me. So I picked him up and he rode in my lap all the way home. I gave the little guy a bath, some lettuce (which he scarfed!), and let him hop around the house. He was clearly someone's pet, and I think even litter box trained. Axl has been having a great time 'babysitting' him and has made it his personal job to watch his every move.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to keep him (I already feel terrible having my big dog in this little condo), and I think my fiance would not be very happy (I tend to want to keep any furry thing that enters my life). So if you know of anyone that might have a good home, please email me. Here is the little guy... I nicknamed him Jack.

My Wedding Inspiration Pages

So I have put together some pages of ideas and inspiration from colors, locations, looks and feels. I think I really like the feel of them and would like it to be something outside, romantic and in the country. The problem is I haven't seemed to figure out where that is yet.. any ideas??

Nevada, California, My Ring!

After shooting Lisa and Richard's Wedding at the Moorings in Islamorada I hoped a flight to Reno, Nevada then drove to Bridgeport, CA for Jaime and Bob's Ranch Wedding. Both weddings were great and it was so fun to go from a beach wedding in the keys to a ranch wedding in the mountains.
On Monday I shot portraits of Riana in Lake Tahoe, who competes in beauty pageants and is working on her modeling career. Yesterday I shot belly pictures of my cousin Sara, (she is 7 months pregnant!), in the wine country Murphy's, CA. It has been a great photo tour, and I was set to leave this morning to go back to Miami until US Airways canceled my flight! ahhhh! I love air travel! So now I am waiting to see what they can do, I have been on hold an hour so far!

Can't wait to share they images from this last week! In the meantime here is a picture of my beautiful ring! (I just got engaged.. read further!)

Finally! Thailand-Koh Tao

Koh Tao was obviously my favorite part of the trip.. seeing thats where I got engaged! It is considered the second top dive destination in the world next to the Great Barrier Reef. It only really began to be developed in the 1980's and much of the island is still jungle and treacherous dirt roads only accessible by dirt bikes. Even more popular are the wooden banana boat taxis that surround the island. The island is raw and beautiful with clear turquoise waters. We stayed in a bungalow at Sensi Paradise that was unreal. The people, food, water, fish and beaches were incredible. I can't wait to go back!

Thailand-Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand next to Bangkok, with bustling night markets, temples, and rivers. While we were there we shopped at local food markets, took a Thai cooking class, and even went white water rafting.

Thailand- The World's First Elephant Hospital

On the same property as the conservation center, though they are not affiliated, is the first elephant hospital in the world. It was established by an organization called Friends of the Asian Elephant and has been been treating elephants for issues from rapid environment changes, sickness, and threats from man for almost 15 years. Like most great organizations helping animals are in need of continued support, to learn how you can help, click here.
The first elephant we were greeted by was a 2 yr old elephant named Mosha that had stepped on a land mine while following her mother who was working for illegal loggers. She had to walk out of the jungle for 2 days before reaching a road to be transported to the hospital. After amputating much of her leg, she is going to be fitted with the first prosthesis to ever be made for an elephant. She was so sweet and like most babies, just wanted to play.

3_21_hospital

3_20_thailand

Unfortunately, land mines are a common problem and seven years ago this elephant, Motala, stepped on one. Once she reached the hospital, she under went surgery performed by over 150 people to amputate part of her leg. She is now 46, and has had a rigorous and difficult recovery, though they are working on a prosthesis for her as well.

This elephant was being treated for eye infections that had left her almost blind. A couple of the blind elephants that weren't able to go back to their home now have permanent homes at the hospital.

Thailand- The Elephants

We visited the Elephant Conservation near Chiang Mai. Alongside photography, animals have always been a passion of mine and to see these amazing animals firsthand was something else. They are incredible.
Elephants are very important to Thailand's history, spirituality, and economy. Unfortunately, like much of the incredible wildlife in this world they are suffering from habitat loss, illegal logging work and continued exploitation. The Conservation has become a safe haven for many of these amazing animals.

Thailand- Lamphang

We took a crowded local bus to the village of Lamphang. We stayed at the Riverside Guesthouse, which was, of course, on the river. It is a simple, but beautiful collection of dark wood rooms with orchids and thai decorations in every corner. It hadn't taken us too long to get used to sleeping in the heat with no AC, we were pretty used to the constant sweating. Happy We got in town just in time to catch the last bit of the local sunday market. You could buy just about everything you can imagine, and eat so much great food all for what converts to pennies of a US dollar. We loved it!

Ohio!

This last week I have been in Ohio, hence my lack of blogging. I really wanted to blog about the Cicadas (terrible screeching creatures that swarm Ohio every 4, 7 or 14 years), but I simply lost the time. So here is a picture of the lovely little creatures. I hope that you never come in contact with them.. earplugs don't even help!

Picture 4

My main purpose in Ohio was not to see these lovely bugs, rather to see my boyfriend Chad graduate after 7 years of college! (No, he is not a doctor, but very well educated!) It was a packed weekend with dinners and celebration, and great relief! He will be starting a new job in Miami in July and living there full time, Finally!

I also did have a sneak into a winery to do a little wine tasting.. this is one of my mom's favorite places called Vino Moda. It is a brand new winery, and they make the wine right there in town. The wines were great and one of the owners even took us in the back to sample next year's port from the barrel. What a treat, I will be back to buy a bottle next year!

Onward!

Wow! What a crazy week it has been! After leaving Mexico City I went to Reno, Nevada and headed home to Gardnerville which is about an hour from Reno. I was great to see my family, and I always love dropping into the valley to lay my eyes on the snowcapped mountains, so beautiful!
On Friday, we headed to Murphy's California and took one of my favorite drives over highway 4. It is a very steep, windy road that is closed most of the year, but now is open during the summer months. It is full of great views the whole way, you just have to stay on your toes as it is a single lane road most of the way and you never know what is coming around the corner... ahh!
There is still so much snow up there it is amazing.. here is mosquito lake, nice name eh?

Mexico City!

Mexico City!
Finally I am able to blog! I have been in Mexico City since tuesday, and it has been great! I am here for Jeremy and Paola's wedding (in the previous post from Key Biscayne) and a bunch of us girls came early to stay with Paola and her mom. We have been finalizing the details of her wedding (now I know what you girls go through, gosh!). It has been a great way to see such a large city and get a feel for it from a locals view. It is a busy, bustling, and slightly chaotic city with great food, a great vibe, and lots going on.
We have started each morning running in the park. It is a forest with great trails and hills, and then finishing with a glass of fresh squeezed juices for $1! Love it!
We just checked into the hotel tonight and the festivities begin tomorrow, can't wait to have more to show!

Paola and Jeremy's kinda wedding, Key Biscayne

Yes, it was Paola and Jeremy's KINDA wedding. Paola and Jeremy are great friends of mine that will be tying the knot on May 24th in Mexico City. My boyfriend, Chad and I have the pleasure of being in the wedding party and can't wait! However, they decided to get hitched here before going to Mexico just for the legality aspect to avoid any issues. What started out as a trip to the courthouse turned into a super casual family ceremony on the beach followed by a BBQ. So, it was their wedding, kinda.
Here are some shots from the afternoon in Key Biscayne, I can't wait for the huge wedding in Mexico, watch for those images on May 24th.. even though I will have bridesmaid duties, you know I will be sneaking in some photos! Congrats guys!

Axl and Marley and Me

Axl (my dog) was cast in a hero scene of the movie Marley and Me this week. He made his first big screen debut aside 'Marley' a very talented yellow lab, Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. The scene was an obedience class where Marley misbehaves terribly. It is incredible to watch the 'star' dog work, for being so well trained he certainly had no problem being a bad dog for a scene! Here is a picture of Axl, look for him when the film releases on Christmas Day!

12

On another note, I am very happy to report that Oprah did a show on Friday on puppy mills and the reality of where most pet store puppies come from. I hope that it helps bring to light the sad truth of how many dogs are suffering, and by purchasing dogs from them we are fueling a cruel and horrible industry. April 10th is ASPCA Day, check out their website if you are interested to see how you can make a difference in your community. Save an animal and adopt a rescue!

Fly Fishing and Ohio, again!

If you would have asked me a few years ago if I would spend my weekends off in Ohio, or even go there for that matter, you might have been greeted with 'Are you nuts?' Well, love can do funny things to a person... like send them to Ohio twice in one month! My boyfriend and I drove (DROVE!) to Ohio where he will finish up a construction program he is in. He will be staying there for 9 long months, and I must of course return to Miami. However, even though it was a somber trip, we did manage to have some fun and enjoy the great weather...

He did his best to teach me to fly fish, and after about 10 minutes I decided I better stick to taking pictures.. here they are:

2

We also checked out the Fleishman's Estate (as in the people that invented margarine), now called Greenacres. It is beautiful and old and just opened to the public. Recently, Chad's parents were at a wedding reception held there (their first one)- What a gorgeous place for a wedding! Maybe I will start shooting in Ohio... hmmm...

As always great to get out of dodge, back in Miami now.... Looking forward to cooler weather!

Welcome to Los Angeles!!!

After waking up very early, we (Nicole Kent & I) boarded a plane in Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles to go to Pictage Partner Conference. It is my first conference and I am so excited to experience it as well as help out Liana Lehman, (who we just spent time with at Photo Biz Bootcamp in Atlanta).

After such an easy trip, we arrived at the hotel ready to go. We got the booth set up and started to see swarms of photographers in the hotel (somehow they all have a look!). I have already meet so many great people and spent the afternoon catching up on Liana's educational DVD's so I knew what to talk about today, and learn a thing or too!
We got our booth ready, I have already listened to a speaker, gotten completely motivated, and realized again how much I enjoy this type of stuff. I am on information overload, again... ahhhh!!
It is a great thing though!
