An Elegant Farm Wedding in Chicago, Alexa & Tom
Alexa and Tom were married on their family farm,
Ivanhoe Farms just outside of Chicago. The farm is
absolutely stunning and was the perfect backdrop for
their elegant affair. The farm has been in their
family for generations and is full of stunning
antiques and heirlooms, an amazing place for a
wedding. Alexa wore a timeless Vera Wang gown while
the men wore classic tuxedos. After their small
church ceremony the couple released Monarch
butterflies before they departed in the family's
vintage Rolls Royce. The cocktail hour was poolside
accompanied by a trio of strings and floating floral
arrangements. Later the guests danced to the TVK
Orchestra under a high top tent. It was truly an
elegant affair and we had such a blast shooting in
such a unique destination with such wonderful
families. We can't wait to get back to Chicago!

Officially T - One Month and Our Wedding Photographer is...
I have been so busy with weddings
every weekend that I haven't had much to plan and
blog about our own wedding. Today, May 11th, we are
officially a month away! It is amazing how quickly 2
years (Yes, engaged for almost 2 years!) has flown by
and all the things that I put off til 'later' are now
upon us. While I am intentionally not blogging all
the details just yet (have to keep some things a
surprise) I do promise complete blog posts detail by
detail after the wedding. I have already learned so
much about planning and weddings and how it is all so
much fun and all so hard! I think that planning a
wedding is an ultimate self exploration and you learn
so much about partner as well. While I still have yet
to feel what it is like to experience the day I have
taken over a year to plan, I have learned enough to
know it will be over in the
blink of an eye!
That is why, for us, photography was absolutely
number one (shocker!). Deciding on a photographer for
our wedding was beyond challenging. Not only did we
have many talented friends offer to help us capture
our day, but there are so many talented photographers
I admire and I am incredibly indecisive! We wanted
our friends to be at the wedding as 'friends' and
wanted a photographer whose style reflected the type
of wedding we are choosing to have and how we want to
remember it. After months of debate and soul
searching we both excitedly agreed that we wanted
none other than Jose Villa to capture our day. He is one of
the most talented photographers and artists in the
business and his work is one of a kind. Jose's
style embodies everything I was looking for... it
is real, natural, breathtaking and romantic. He
loves outdoor locations, details and one of a kind
events- simply perfect! Here are a few of the many
reasons we love Jose so much and can't wait to
have him at our wedding

(all images copyright
Jose Villa)
Need I say more? I love living
behind the camera, and for maybe the first time ever
can't wait to be in front of the lens!!! Check
out Jose's blog for more gorgeous wedding
inspiration.

Your Wedding & Lighting
First comes location selection. When visiting any venue notice the light and consider how it will be during your event. For getting ready, ideally select a tidy room with lots of large windows and space for you and your bridesmaids.
For the ceremony, if it is outdoors the perfect location is well lit with lots of open shade. Many of my keys weddings are sunset ceremonies, which are gorgeous, however then you must plan to do portraits beforehand as there will be no light after the ceremony to shoot in. Remember that on a beach or location without lights, we can use flashes to light you, but the landscape will be lost. Outdoors you also want to avoid having a ceremony in the middle of the day when light is the harshest and least flattering. Avoid dark, uneven shadows that will fall on your faces, try to position yourselves where you will be in even light.
If you are planning an indoor ceremony, seek out a location with windows and ambient light.
The reception, this is where lighting is sooo important! After the sun goes down you are dependent on the lighting of the venue that you select. It is very important to visit your venue when it is dark and see what you will be working with. Lighting can set the mood for your venue and has a dramatic influence in the quality of your reception photographs.
Uplighting is a wonderful option for any venue. With uplighting you can create a completely different ambiance for your space relatively affordably. Often your band or DJ will offer this service (you should inquire), however you can also hire a lighting crew to get even more creative. Uplyte is a great one here in South Florida.
If you cannot afford to add uplighting consider candles, lantern or string lights. In my opinion you can never have too many candles and they are always romantic and beautiful. You can find bundles of small votives online very affordably. Lanterns can be rented from your florist or a rental company and are wonderful outdoors or in. If wind is a concern consider LED candles with no flame. All will help create a unique atmosphere and beautiful images. Enjoy!

Question:
I am recently engaged and
although I am very excited about planning the
wedding, I already feel overwhelmed. Everyone has an
opinion. While I want everyone to feel included, I’m
beginning to feel like it is not “my” wedding
anymore…
Answer:
The emotions around a
wedding can be complicated. Despite the happiness,
some couples feel a loss of freedom and identity as
they negotiate with their family and friends, and
with each other. The challenge is to avoid a block in
the lines of communication.
An engagement is a time when people learn new things
about each other – patience is essential. Intimacy is
also important. Commit to quiet moments that will
allow you to retain your sense of autonomy and to
reconnect with your partner on a very basic level.
For a bride, remember to focus on elements that are
truly “yours” – the wedding dress being one. Your
dress should be the ultimate statement of “you” on
your wedding day.

Liz and Steve, Married!
On Saturday when I arrived for the big day, I couldn't believe my eyes. Fresh flowers, newly laid sod, and a bright sparkling pool that had been sprinkled with petals. It was lovely. Liz and Steve managed to turn a dirt lot with a tear down into one of the best wedding locations ever, and they did almost all the work themselves.
The do it yourself story continued when friends of Liz's and myself Aria and Paola of D'Lish (so.dlish@yahoo.com) stepped in to plan the wedding. Not only did they plan, but they created flower arrangements, made invites, favors, and Aria even baked the wedding cake!!
They had a wonderful guitarist named Leiah Sicilliano, Liz's hair was done locally at Aqua Salon of Ft. Lauderdale, and her makeup was done by her best friend's sister Loli Ponce.
The wedding was relaxed, beautiful and reminded us all the simplicity is stunning. To see the full slideshow click here. Congratulations Liz and Steve!

My Wedding Update
I definitely feel less stressed out with this decision and can focus on the projects at hand for KT Merry Photography. I have not made any vendor/venue decisions yet for the wedding, and think I will slowly start to now. Does anyone know of a great property in Lake Tahoe that would rent it out for my wedding?? Any other ideas? We're only going to do it once, better do it right!!
Veronica and Jeremy, El Conquistador, Puerto Rico 10.25.08
Chris Joriann and I arrived on Friday to photograph the Saturday evening wedding and reception. The location was beautiful and Veronica, being a planner herself, did not miss any details. From all the groomsmen with monogramed shirts, to the bridesmaids matching monogramed jumpsuits, to bridesmaid cups, luggage tags for guests and it went on and on.. I always love the details!
After the wedding the party continued with dancing, dancing and more dancing. Veronica and Jeremy, (who I might add, have been dating for 10 years!) even finished the night off with a Dirty Dancing 'lift'. Congrats to Veronica and Jeremy and here's to many more years of celebrating!

Craziness and Puerto Rico!!
This last weekend I was in Puerto Rico for Veronica and Jeremy's wedding. It was beautiful, and reminded me how much I love destination weddings! I will post more tomorrow but here is some eye candy for now!

Lisa and Richard, The Moorings Islamorada, 7.10.08
They are a super sweet couple from South Carolina and were married on July 10th at the Moorings in Islamorada. They held the ceremony on the beach with the officiant and Lisa's sister and her husband present, no other guests. It was intimate, beautiful and very relaxed. It was great to spend the afternoon with them (makes me want to move to the south!), and we had plenty of time to shoot on the beautiful grounds and for them to enjoy their day.
Such great outfits!

Liz and Patrick, Ironstone Vineyards, Murphys California, 5.31.08
We couldn't have been given a more beautiful day. Liz and Patrick were very relaxed throughout the entire day, and Liz couldn't stop smiling. The reception was great, with Ironstone's wines atop the tables, and the party even sang along to Garth Brooks. They also had a bar of candy set up with little paper bags for you to scoop candy into. It was in large glass bowls as well as big lollipops placed into grass, it was a great idea and I loved how it looked. I hope to be back at Ironstone soon, it was truly a pleasure. Congrats to Liz and Patrick! Here is some of our day...
This shot cracks me up.. they are looking at the garter like it is the plague.. who says men are afraid of commitment?
Paola and Jeremy's Wedding, Mexico City, 5.24.08
After spending a wonderful few days at Paola's mother, Lili's house, (who graciously opened her home to 5 girls and a baby!), the wedding arrived. Seeing that I was a bridesmaid, I did have certain duties, such as getting to the beauty salon at 8am (ahh!), and helping to make sure things went off without a hitch... and I couldn't help but shooting too!
Paola and Jeremy are both graduates from the Culinary Institute of America (where they meet), so hospitality is literally their business. They flawlessly blended the Mexican and Jewish traditions, ranch surroundings and timeless elegance, and gourmet hors d'oeuvres to midnight mexican. With over 235 people, some speaking english, some spanish, everyone melted together and it was a hoping fiesta. They even had a mechanical bull, and if it couldn't get better, Paola rode on it in her gown!
I had such a great time and loved being a guest at a wedding. It also did happen to be my birthday (yippee!), and I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend it, drinking and dancing with people I love, it will be a tough act to follow next year! Here are a few of my favorite images from the day, Enjoy!
A little later in the night.... Chad, Paola, and Jeremy on the bull! So cool!
Orly and Devin, Ritz Carlton, 5.10.08
Francis and Heath, The Boca Resort, 5.9.08
Is that not the redest hair you have ever seen??
Karlene and Matt
They had a blast throughout the entire day, and had a energy packed reception. Karlene is from Trinidad so many of her relatives had made the trip. Judging from Karlene and her family, I came to the conclusion that Trinidad must have some of the most beautiful woman in the world, it was like attending a beauty pageant (and you should have seen them dance)! With over 315 people attending the celebration, during the party, somehow almost all of them were on the dance floor. Super fun, great smiles, and great luck to you both, though, I don't think you'll be needing it!!
What a sight!
Karlene could dance like you can't believe! In fact ALL the women in her family could, it was amazing!
Jessica and Brian, American Orchid Society, Del Ray
Paola and Jeremy's kinda wedding, Key Biscayne
Here are some shots from the afternoon in Key Biscayne, I can't wait for the huge wedding in Mexico, watch for those images on May 24th.. even though I will have bridesmaid duties, you know I will be sneaking in some photos! Congrats guys!
I love this shot!
Jeremy and his Dad
Jeremy and Paola's buddies from the Coast Guard even did a fly by!
Alison and Rick's Slideshow
Here is another image from their wedding that Nicole had shot of me shooting them on the dock.... Thank goodness the key's water is shallow!

Alison and Rick, The Moorings, Isalmorada, Florida
There was a lot of emotion in the air, and tears flowing from beginning to end. It was truly flawless, from Arthur's (a huge black Newfoundland, and Alison's second love) surprise appearance at the ceremony, a beautiful sunset, to first rate fireworks over the ocean, nothing was overlooked. The wedding had a great flavor, from beachy keys to elegant and royal. Rick and Alison are such a sweet couple, I couldn't have had a better bride and groom to work with. And to make it even better, near the end of the night we opened a Photo Station to take portraits of the guests and everyone had such a great time with it... rubber fish, flamingos, hats and all. Thanks so much to Nicole and Katie who second shot, you were great! Rick and Alison, enjoy Italy and all the great pasta and wine!!

It was a blast, and WOW they could dance!
